This is from Steve W. Schaefer who reviewed A BIRD OF THE AIR in advance of a special screening in Madison, Georgia. We thought he was really smart about the film and he agreed to let us share his commentary.

A Bird of the Air
On September 20^th, at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, the first film of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers will be “A Bird of the Air.”

Many of the films in the series are documentaries, usually most compelling. But the first film this year is a straight Romance---sort of a modern version of the classic screwball comedy genre of the 1930s and 1940s. This film will be released this fall, so here is an opportunity to enjoy a pre-screening of this very entertaining, unique, and compelling film.

It is about a withdrawn man, stoic and hermitic (because both parents were killed in an auto accident when he was four). His family’s identity could not be verified so he is a man with no name---called Lyman---just Lyman (Jason Hurst)---a name just for convenience. He works as one of those angels of the highway---rescuing folks stranded on the highway at night---or scraping up road kill if necessary---or picking up items scattered about that might be a hazard to drivers and riders. He is invisible.

The film is narrated by a Margie, a waitress (Linda Edmond), who often serves the taciturn Lyman. That is a very nice touch…she never plays a major role in the action of the film…something like the narrator in a Greek play---there but not there; important, essential, but not very “showy.”

One day, a parrot flies into his trailer. The parrot’s vocabulary is most intriguing and soon our lonely Lyman becomes obsessed with the parrot and wonders where did he come from---what owner taught him those words and phrases? And thus he goes on a quest.

For help, as any intelligent person would know, he goes to a library and a librarian. The librarian is a free spirit named Fiona (Rachel Nichols). With her help, he discovers that the parrot had more than one owner---in fact, many, many owners.

Through his journey, as you might expect, Lyman finds more than answers to the parrot’s mysteries; he finds himself. And Fiona, hardly the suppressed stereotype of a librarian, finds something as well.

I was taken aback by “A Bird of the Air.” I did not expect anything this fresh and original. I see a lot of films, hundreds a year and “A Bird of the Air” is the kind of surprise that makes trudging through cinematic drek worthwhile.

The oddball characters that parade through the film, mostly as former owners of the parrot, including Buck Henry, is like going through a Whitman’s Sampler---a sweet experience that includes some delicious nuts.

The acting is light but totally convincing, not unlike the style and ease of “Little Miss Sunshine” released back in 2006. This is what happens when talented actors feel comfortable with their characters and are given respect and freedom from their director. My hat goes off to Margaret Whitton, an actress, who is making her feature film debut as a director with this gem of a film. I look forward to more from her as a director.

There is some sentimentality in this film; no harm there: it is a feel-good film, but do bring your tissues…the movie’s tug of the tear ducts might be a bit manipulative---but “A Bird of the Air” is so charming, all is forgiven.

And there is a dog. And any movie with a charismatic librarian who likes dogs over cats is OK by me. More than OK by me; it gets extra bonus points from me.

I do have one complaint. “A Bird of the Air” kind of spoiled me for the following weekend of film viewing. I keep thinking, “This isn’t as good as "A Bird of the Air.’” Now, that was a serendipitous discovery---a bird of a different color if you will---from the usual cinematic fare.

Rachel Nichols (“GI Joe,” Star Trek”) and Jackson Hurst (“Drop Dead Diva,” Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life”) are boarding to star in Margaret Whitton’s feature directing debut “The Loop” -- an off-beat romance with a screenplay by Roger Towne (“The Recruit,” “The Natural”), based on the 1992 novel by Joe Coomer.

Warren Spector is executive producer and Steven Tabakin is producer through New York independent Tashtego Films, with Greg Schultz joining as co-producer.

Linda Emond, Buck Henry, Matte Osian, and Rocco Sisto have also been cast.

Hurst plays an isolated Courtesy Patrol Driver who cruises the New Mexico highway at night, tending to stranded motorists, until he becomes obsessed with the origins of a mysterious talking parrot. Nichols is a free-spirited college librarian who, with her basset hound in tow, up-ends his world and opens the mysteries of his orphan childhood -- and the unlikely and intense romance between these two unique characters transforms both them in extraordinary ways.
Shooting begins next month in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Rachel Nichols was recently seen in this summer’s blockbusters “G.I. Joe” and “Star Trek.” Jackson Hurst will next be seen in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and appears on Lifetime TV’s “Drop Dead Diva.”
“The Loop” features cinematography by Philippe Rousselot, with production design by Mark Alan Duran, and costumes by Joe Aulisi. Casting is by Amanda Mackey and Cathy Sandrich Gelfond.

Nichols is represented by ICM and Management 360. Hurst is repped by Innovative Artists and Lee Peterson and Associates.
Tashtego Films is also gearing up “The Moment When,” James Lapine’s adaptation of his acclaimed off- Broadway play, and is in development with an adaptation of Rosanne Parry’s young-adult novel “Heart of a Shepherd.”

Running away from Brooklyn to make a new start with her teenage son Linda, an affluent African-American woman, buys a ranch in West Texas. Why Tashtego Films?

Why Tashtego? It has everything to do with the mystery and romance of the small island off the coast of Massachusetts called Martha’s Vineyard. When I first encountered the island I was a quite young but something about the wild beauty of the island hooked me. Seriously enchanted, I always knew I would return some day. When I finally returned, too many years later, I rented a small house from a local family named Smalley in the town that was then still called Gay Head (now renamed Aquinnah). I discovered that local lore had it that Amos Smalley, a relative, had harpooned a white whale. Which of course sent me to Melville’s great story of the sea, Moby Dick. Because Melville wrote so convincingly about the great anguish of the whale, I’ve always read Moby Dick not only as a tale of obsession, but also, at least partially, a tale of the whale’s retribution.

Tashtego, a Wampanoag Indian, is described beautifully as “a son of the Prince of the Powers of the Air.” He is the first to name the whale that obsesses Ahab.... “that white whale must be the same that some call Moby Dick.” And in this, my favorite passage, he is the first to spot a whale:

Thus we were weaving and weaving away when I started at a sound so strange, long drawn, and musically wild and unearthly, that the ball of free will dropped from my hand, and I stood gazing up at the clouds whence that voice dropped like a wing. High aloft in the cross-trees was that mad Gay-Header, Tashtego. His body was reaching eagerly forward, his hand stretched out like a wand, and at brief sudden intervals he continued his cries. To be sure the same sound was that very moment perhaps being heard all over the seas, from hundreds of whalemen's look-outs perched as high in the air; but from few of those lungs could that accustomed old cry have derived such a marvellous cadence as from Tashtego the Indian's.

As he stood hovering over you half suspended in air, so wildly and eagerly peering towards the horizon, you would have thought him some prophet or seer beholding the shadows of Fate, and by those wild cries announcing their coming.

"There she blows! there! there! there! she blows! she blows!"

So, for a film company that hopes to identify and develop stories that will obsess, stretch out like a wand and drop like wing, it seems right. To say nothing of our hopes to have your ball of free will drop for a while. And I like the taste of the the name in my mouth Tash TEE go. Kind of dashing and fearless and tasty all at the same time doncha think? And besides ... Squibnocket was already taken.

Here is a link to a wonderful group that keeps the sea creatures (not just whales) away from the modern day harpooneers seashepherd.org They don’t just conserve, they police -- Ahab wouldn’t stand a chance against them and I like to think Tashtego would have been on their side now.

Though we were well-served by the name Tapwater Media we wanted to find something more unique and personal, and after a long process of deliberation we arrived at Tashtego Films, after the character from Moby Dick, a harpooner from Martha's Vineyard.

Glen Luchford's film DARK YELLOW won the Cowboy Award for Best Short Film at the Jackson Hole Film Festival. The announcement came from program director Cevin Cathell, who reports that attendance was up significantly for the Fifth Anniversary Festival, and that this year's "competition was very stiff." The festival, which opened on June 5, closes tonight with Steve Conrad's The Promotion.

Constantine's Sword, a documentary by our good friend Oren Jacoby, will open Friday, April 18 at two great theaters in New York--the Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and the Quad Cinema. In the following weeks the film will play in LA, Chicago, Boston, Houston and Dallas.

Full Battle Rattle festival screenings

FULL BATTLE RATTLE is out on the festival circuit!

Following a world premiere at the Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin, the film by Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss made its US premiere at SXSW in Austin where it won a Special Jury prize and it just played the Full Frame Documentary Festival in North Carolina.
